Honeyville Steel Cut Oats are whole grain oat groats that have been cut into smaller pieces. The difference between rolled and steel cut oats is that steel cut leaves the endosperm intact, making them healthier than rolled.

The Honeyville filtering process helps ensure that only the best quality oats are selected to progress to the cleaning and cutting process. This minimal processing retains all of the nutrients that people look for in their oats. Steel cut oats are a rich source of fiber, protein, and magnesium. Not only are you able to eat them as oatmeal but they add health benefits to bread, cookies, muffins, pie crust, and protein shakes. All of that simply makes our oats a cut above the rest.

Shelf-Life:  Stores for 10 to 15 years in a sealed #10 can (oxygen absorber included) under ideal storage conditions (cool, dry place). Once opened, it has an average shelf life of 6 to 12 months. All other packaging such as the 50lb bag and 2lb bag have a shelf life of 6 to 12 months.

Instructions:  For hot cereal, add 1 part oats to 6 parts boiling water. Reduce heat to medium and continue cooking for up to 45 minutes stirring occasionally. In the final 15 minutes, reduce heat to low and stir as needed. A pressure cooker will work the best for cooking steel cut oats.

Uses:  Steel Cut Oats can be used as a delicious hot cereal, or as a healthy and flavorful ingredient in oatmeal cookies, multi-grain breads, rolls and more

Great Oats!

This is a staple food at our house. We eat it every morning for breakfast. It is every bit as good as the Scottish imported oats and comes in metal containers just like the Scottish oats but costs less and is a domestic product. We buy it 5 cases at a time to get the quantity discount. The shelf life is such that it makes a good emergency stock as well as a staple food. I am a little confused because the old cans said it has a shelf life of 10 - 20 years and the new cans say only 7 - 10 years. I am sure we will not keep it around that long but I wonder if the processing changed or only the label. The new can last night had a lovely aroma of oats when I opened it. Our breakfast recipe is: 1/2 cup oats

Best price and taste

These have a very nutty flavor and texture. Quaker oats tastes absolutely awful after you've tried Honeyville steel cut oats. I cook mine in the crockpot on high for 65 minutes usually half a can at a time and then put it in the fridge and eat on it for the rest of the week. I'm a competitive cyclist so I eat a lot of this stuff as it has a lower glycemic index and is good for keeping me lean. I add some almond milk and various types of berries to make it perfect.

My favorite breakfast

We've ordered two 50-kb bags over the past year. The shipping time is expedient, the price is right and the oats are clean and fresh tasting. Storage hasn't been a problem- we repackage into 1-gallon plastic zip bags, push out air and freeze until needed. Bring a bag to room temperature without opening so that the oats don't take up moisture, and store for daily use in a snap plastic-lidded glass container. A recipe we developed (and really enjoy) for 2 servings is: 2 cups water, 3/4 cup oats, 2 T. quinoa, 1 T. flax seeds, 1/4 cup golden raisins, 1/4 tsp. salt. Bring to boil and simmer about 20 min. Top with toasted almonds, and a bit of brown sugar and milk to taste.

Great product

I love these steel-cut oats and order by case of the No. 10 cans, and I am only cooking for myself! Shelf life, even if the cans are opened, is outstanding. I put water and oats for one serving in a small glass jar surrounded by more water in a small slow cooker, leave it on low overnight, and they are ready for breakfast in the morning. Great with raisins and brown sugar.

3rd bag

Third time I've ordered these 50 lb bags. Best price I can find. I've tried oats from multiple countries and, for my tastes, these are as good as any for a fraction of the price. Great deal.

Great breakfast oats

For the last couple of years we've been eating these steel cut oats for breakfast on most mornings - along with other foods of course. We add a bit of brown sugar or honey and some raisins, etc. I cook up a batch on Sunday and then spoon out bowls and nuke them each morning so I only have to cook the oats once a week. It's healthy and very cost effective. I tried buying 50 pounds of loose oats and storing them in 5 gallon buckets with gamma seal lids, but they didn't stay fresh and I would end up feeding the bottom half to the chickens. The chickens loved it, but it was expensive animal feed. Now I buy cases of the #10 cans which work much better even though they're a bit more expensive per unit. Penny wise/pound foolish... "Price" is different from "value". I have multiple cases in my food storage which I rotate. "Just in case".
