Honeyville's Flavored-Like Chicken Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) is actually a meat analogue product made through a special extrusion process which provides a 100% vegetable product that approaches the taste and texture of meat. This highly nutritious vegetarian meat substitute is processed from defatted soy flour which contains more than 52% protein and 18% total dietary fiber. TVP has been used for many years in U.S. Food Nutritional Service programs and has been an integral part of the School Lunch program. Because of the recognized health and nutritional benefit of soy protein in the diet and the added benefit of low moisture and low fat content, Honeyville Flavored-like Chicken TVP is an ideal product for long term food storage and emergency preparedness.

Shelf-Life: Chicken Flavored TVP will store for 10 to 20 years in a sealed #10 can (oxygen absorber included) under ideal storage conditions (cool, dry place). Once opened, it has an average shelf life of 6 to 12 months.

Instructions:  Add one part textured vegetable protein to one part hot water. Allow chicken TVP to hydrate for about 15 minutes. Adding ½ cup textured vegetable protein to ½ cup of water will yield about 1 cup of cooked meat substitute.

Uses:  Chicken Flavored TVP can be used separately or in combination with meat as an effective meat extender in enchiladas, soups, salads, pastas and more.

There's chicken in that there can !!

This was just part of a multi-can order. It arrived almost as fast as we ordered it. We immediately opened it and sure enough there was chicken TVP in the can. We've always used non-flavored TVP before and seasoned it to our taste so we weren't quite prepared for the saltiness of this flavored concoction. We made our usual chicken pot pie with it and the flavor was very good other than being saltier than a Dead Sea mermaid's kiss. The second time around we used a little warm water and pre-rinsed the TVP before we committed it to our recipe and it was a lot more palatable and health. We haven't tried the other 5 flavors we bought and decided to just just go ahead and shelve them in our shelter. They might be a little more acceptable in a survival situation after eating bunker food for a few days.

A bit crunchy but tastes good!

I feel it would taste better,if you have all the time in the world to follow the directions
and cook. But for the grab and go cooking theres the tradeoff of taste which is somewhat
acceptable these days,its TVP afterall

Good, but salty

Just opened up the can and prepared a 1/2 cup of this product. It re-hydrated very well. I placed a 1/2 cup TVP and a 1/2 cup boiling water in an insulated coffee mug, stirred, covered, checked less than 10 minutes later to stir again, and it had pretty much already soaked up all the water.

Eating it plain --> It is VERY salty on its own -- it definitely needs to balanced out with some non-salty ingredients...or, I'm hoping that rinsing the TVP once and dumping that batch of water, before letting it sit to re-hydrate will help...

Overall: I'm happy with how well and how quickly it re-hydrates, happy with the flavor (considering that this is a long-term-storage-capable meat sub), the only negative is the extreme saltiness.

Here's my quick recipe...

I take a 1/2 cup of this and pour a 1/2 cup of almost boiling water (calls for "hot" water but I found this works better) on it and stir once every 5 minutes for 15 minutes. For the small amount I make (just for one person) I find that the shape of the container makes a difference in consistency. At the same time I bring 1 cup of water with 1/2 cup of Honeyville Farms long grain white rice to a boil and then follow their directions to allow it to continue cooking for 15 minutes on low heat. When both are done the rice goes in a bowl and I sort of hollow the middle out about 1/2 way down...then I drain off the excess juice from the chicken TVP and spoon it --the chicken TVP-- in with the rice. I then pour some teriyaki sauce over it and enjoy a nice bowl of teriyaki chicken & rice! "When I get better at this ""cooking"" stuff" I will try to add some steamed carrot strings and broccoli to it. "Other than the ""chicken"" being in small peanut size chunks" it tasted pretty darn close to what I get at various restaurants near me. "You have to play around a bit with it to find your preference. I use a ""little"" more water then they call for" so the chicken TVP will be fully submersed and --as I mentioned-- I use almost boiling water and not just hot. Now all I need Honeyville to do is create freeze dried/dehydrated teriyaki sauce for my nuclear bunker...oh and build another store near St. George Utah so I can move there and manage it for them : )

VERY GOOD

I decided to try this because the regular FD chicken wasn't availble. I was pleasantly surprised (after trying the chili flavor :-())) the chicken was very palatable I ate it straight out of the can it was cruchy and tasty. I bought this to make meals in a jar for my husband who is a truck driver to keep in the truck as a healthier alternative to high fat/sodium truck stop food. I'v had to convince him that I can make him good tasting food that is healthier for him to fix in the truck. I made the chicken/broccoli/rice skillet meal controlling everything that went into it. we had that and a salad very nutritious and tasty. Buy with confidence I don't think you will be disappointed.

Just like the real thing!

While not as large as traditional chunk the taste AND texture are very authentic!! I didnt think it was too salty but I added a little extra water and let it sit longer and lightly drained it. I have 5 children and it definitely will save us money for recipes that call for chicken like a cassarole enchiladas or chicken soup...Im even going to try to make chicken nuggets by partially freezing the chicken before rolling in batter and frying..I'll let you know how it works out!! You OWE it to yourself to check this out.. Chicken is getting very expensive and to be able to have something that I can pull off the shelf REGARDLESS of the price in the local grocery is a relief!!

I have used these to make the enchilada recipe as well as making "chicken" chili and it was very good. I was very pleasantly surprised. I did think that they were a little too salty (tasted out of the can) so I have done a rinse after draining them to try and cut the sodium level down a bit. I think this is a great product and I will definately purchase more.
