Honeyville's Flavored-Like Bacon Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) is actually a meat analogue product made through a special extrusion process which provides a 100% vegetable product that approaches the taste and texture of meat. This highly nutritious vegetarian meat substitute is processed from defatted soy flour which contains more than 52% protein and 18% total dietary fiber. TVP has been used for many years in U.S. Food Nutritional Service programs and has been an integral part of the School Lunch program. Because of the recognized health and nutritional benefit of soy protein in the diet and the added benefit of low moisture and low fat content, Honeyville Flavored-like Bacon TVP is an ideal product for long term food storage and emergency preparedness.

Shelf-Life:  Bacon Flavored TVP will store for 10 to 20 years in a sealed #10 can (oxygen absorber included) under ideal storage conditions (cool, dry place). Once opened, it has an average shelf life of 6 to 12 months.

Instructions:  Add one part textured vegetable protein to one part hot water. Allow bacon TVP to hydrate for about 15 minutes. Adding ½ cup textured vegetable protein to ½ cup of water will yield about 1 cup of cooked meat substitute.

Uses:  Bacon Flavored TVP can be used separately or in combination with meat as an effective meat extender in omelets, soups, baked potatoes and more.

A recipe to share using bacon tvp

I bought this to make a specific recipe and LOVE them. Not happy with the red color and how healthy that is not, but otherwise a YES for me. I want to try it in the red eye gravy mentioned on these reviews. Try this yummy recipe and save. It costs almost $2.00 per box in our area, that is not including the mayo.

My suddenly ranch bacon salad.........

1. Start cooking 2 cups of small shell pasta in 5 to 6 cups water.

2. Put the following into a large mixing bowl.......
1/4 to 1/3 cup Honeyville bacon flavored TVP bits
1 T. dried chopped onions: after measuring out the Tablespoon, then press/pinch to 'mince' a bit
2 to 3 tsp. dried parsley flakes
1 and 1/2 tsp. salt or sea salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/8 tsp. garlic granules
1/8 tsp. onion granules

3. put about 1 cup frozen green peas into a bowl of cold water to thaw

4. peel and grate 1 medium carrot (not the fine grate)

5. When pasta is tender to your preference, take pan off heat. Drain the green peas of all cold water and add to the cooked pasta/hot water. Also add the grated carrot. Let sit one minute to 'cook'. Drain all in a colander; rinse with cold water to cool; drain again. Put into mixing bowl with bacon bits/spices/herbs.

6. Mix in 2/3 c. mayonnaise (do not use miracle whip or store brand salad dressing for this)

Ranch bacon suddenly salad at a cost of about $1.25, including the mayo:

I only buy pasta when on sale for $.50 / 16 oz. which is 4 cups dry pasta.....that makes the 2 cups of pasta used in this salad $.25
I buy frozen green peas once a year on sale for $.70 / 16 oz. not sure, but think I used less than 1/4th of the bag.....$.15
1 carrot from garden
A fourth-cup of the bacon tvp is about $.25
dried onions and seasonings.....a few pennies
mayonnaise from a gallon jug bought at Sam's club, about $.40 for 2/3 cup

AWESOME BACON TVP

Bought a can a couple months back to try based on the ratings..well people you can believe these are honest reviews and ratings. We don't eat meat anymore and bacon was always a favorite especially used in "red-eye" gravy with bisquits. This substitute is great as salad topping baked potatoes and here's a tip for you when using in gravy or flavoring green beans turnip greens etc I put this in the last 5 minutes..makes a great texture and keeps the initial "bacon" flavor and slight firm..much better than fully hydrated. Add to onions and grill with then put on your bisquit with cheese...mmmm mmm. Try it this way or add to your cream soups at the last minute ... delish! Add to your veggie "meatloaf for a good tweak. Yes it does get pink when hydrated and it is sort of a turn off so try it the last couple few minutes in your recipe. (By the way in the "meatloaf" it still turns pink :-( sorry. Good Stuff Honeyville...I've not been disappointed at all.

Perfect for the price

My husband and I are very pleased with this product. It smells just like bacon when you open the can and they taste great dry. When reconstituted they turn a red color which I relate to raw meat so that is a turn off but otherwise for the price it is a great substitute!

Begging strips for people

Just like the stuff in the little glass jar. Amazingly convincing on salad. Smell and texture *dry* are so good we haven't bothered to soak and use.
