LifeStraw by Vestergaard is personal water sanitation in a convenient, portable package. This mighty personal water filter is small enough to fit in your pocket, but big enough to purify and filter a minimum of 264 gallons (1,000 liters) of water. That's more clean drinking water than many humans drink in an entire year! Weighing in at just 2 ounces, this pint-sized dynamo removes 99.9999 percent of bacteria and 99.9 percent of protozoan parasites that can contaminate standing water.

The Life Straw uses a hollow-fiber, microfiltration technology to filter both the micro-organisms you can't see, and the dirty particulate that you can see. This pocket water filter is made of durable plastic, is chemical-free, and does not require batteries or power of any kind.

LifeStraw is ideal in recreational settings like camping and hiking where water is present (please don't try to drink saltwater through a water filter, that would be bad). Freshwater ponds, streams, and rivers are great sources to filter through your LifeStraw. In an emergency situation like an earthquake, flood, hurricane, landslide, tornado, or psunami, this personal, portable water filtration system is just the insurance policy you need. Life Straw prevents common waterborne diseases including: Cholera, Cryptosporidium, Cyclosporiasis, Diarrheal Disease, Dysentery, Gastroenteritis, Giardiasis, Guinea Worm, Hepatitis E, Typhoid Fever, and more. The LifeStraw does have some limitations. It will not filter heavy metals, salt water, or industrial chemicals in solution. What the filter does do is limits your exposure to dangerous bacteria.

It works

You do have to have a good suck, but it could save your life.

Excellent Backup to Water Storage

We took one of these on a recent camping trip to test out. The Good: We filtered some pretty murky lake water into serviceable drinking water. I was pretty impressed at the clarity and taste. The Bad: You have to suck pretty hard to pull water through the filter, which makes sense given the type of filter. We're adding one of these for each member of the family to our emergency kit. It's good peace of mind. Water is just so critical.

Does Not Work.

I decided to try out this filter before depending on it in an emergency and it filtered 1 cup of already filtered, potable water from the domestic water supply and completely stopped working. I was unable to back flush it or draw any more water into the filter. It acts completely clogged up, although the only water it was trying to filter was already potable and filtered. I wanted to try the product out and am glad I did, since I found out that this filter will not work as advertised. If it can not filter already filtered water, how could it work with non potable water? Find another product for emergency water filtration. $20 is very expensive for 1 cup of water.

HONEYVILLE RESPONSE: Andrew, it sounds like you need to prime the filter. To do so, uncap both ends, stand it up in a tall glass of water (or the river, or water bottle) for 15 seconds. That allows the water to creep up the membrane without having to suck on it. Then take 5 quick sips, and it should flow just fine.
